Hello, Hello, What's Your Name?

Today we learned about the products that the ladies will be making, and each got a specialty so we could work with different ladies.  I, being the Jewish girl, of course got to make the Christmas tree ornaments.  It was pretty tough learning how the necklaces are made though.  It's actually funny because when we got there the ladies picked it up much more quickly than we did.

It was really great getting to work with the ladies.  I'm working with Veronica, but she doesn't really speak English at all (some of the other ladies do), so that's a bit difficult but I'm sure we'll get past it.  Hand motions are very helpful.  Aidah's daughter, Ado, also loved the ornaments so she came over, despite seeming shy, and got glue all over both herself and me but had fun until the ladies kicked her out.  Thankfully the glue all peeled off like another layer of skin.  It kinda looked like I was shedding my skin...
I started taking pictures, too, since these ladies are already used to how this works.  The kids were funny too, asking for pictures and then looking at them.  When I put my camera down I noticed they were eyeing it so I'll have to be careful about that.

At the end of the day we heard the school children saying some sort of prayer that has to do with sins and praying to be forgiven, I forgot how it went.  Then on our way out all the kids latched onto us and walked with us and left whenever they were home.  It was fun talking to them.  They taught me a song "Hello, hello, What's your name? My name is _______ What's your name?"  Good way to meet people.  They also called all of us "auntie" and Jack "uncle".  A bunch of them were hanging on and climbing on Jack and practically knocking him over.  They also said they're going to write us nice letters, so that'll be fun.  They asked how to spell our names and all.  I'll need to try to get pictures but it's hard while being pulled at so much.  A lot of them also ask for their pictures to be taken.  We also learned that when people hold their hands up around their eyes kind of like making glasses or binoculars it means they want their picture taken.

Also, just for you all to know since I was asked this, I'll let you know what I do at night when we get home.  Basically curfew is 7, but sometimes we're tired and just come home earlier, so there's lots of time around here.  Basically, night is shower time (at least I prefer showering at night cuz I'd rather shower then than in the morning when I'm about to get dirty again).  We have dinner and talk a while, then it's our time.  That's when I blog, go online and talk to friends back home, check e-mail, go through and edit some of my photos (that will start becoming a bigger part of my evening), journal, read, play games (we haven't yet but we do HAVE games so we'll play sometime), listen to music, watch movies and tv shows (I got Homeland Season 1 yesterday for a dollar so that'll occupy me for a bit and when I run out I'll get the second season).  Also if we have any preparations we can do some then if we don't want to do them in the morning, we've cut string at night... We were also talking with Becca who said maybe we could learn to cook their foods, so that would probably be an evening activity.  Hopefully by the end we can cook for them.  Speaking of, this morning we had these delicious pancakes, and for dinner (though I couldn't eat it but would love to learn to make it so I can when I have kosher meat) there was this rice/beef mix that I forget the name of but looked great.

We also learned how to say "Thank you for cooking", "Wadaykay" (Wa as in the store Wawa, day as in day, kay as in the letter k).

Have I said that apparently they not only do our sheets and towels but they're going to do all our laundry? We all feel awful about it.  It's awkward having them do everything for us.

Tomorrow's our first time working with the new ladies, so that'll be a bit more difficult than today, but I'm excited.

A few pictures:

As we were walking back from Namatala today we turned a corner and saw this blue car hit a white motorcycle, which we then realized was a police officer.  The police stopped and the car hit it again, seemingly on purpose as it was kind of like a tap, only you don't generally do that on the road.... The officer jumped off his bike and started yelling at the guy and made him get out of the car.  We were pretty close when it first happened but moved across the street to watch with everyone else who was staring.  I was a bit nervous to bring my camera up to my eye, as I don't know what the cop would've done, so Chanel and Jessica suggested I just take the picture from my hip, where my camera was hanging anyway.

On a nicer note, a lot of kids on the way home asked for pictures so I thought I'd post one!

Also, I know I was trying to keep this post short, but as I'm sitting here writing this the tv is on in the lobby and there's some show and it's interesting because they just talk about HIV in a conversation about relationships in just a normal sitcom type show.  Ok I'm done for now! I think this'll be an early night.
